It's a gloomy day outside today but I'll definitely take the rain over the snow that some of our neighbor provinces are getting today! Whenever it's rainy and gloomy out, I always find it difficult to have the energy to get everything done around the house that I intend to - I'll be honest, I rely a little too much on caffeine on days like today! Luckily, I had an exciting afternoon with a new client today and that always gets me motivated to work hard and get my butt back in gear for the week!
I have had many suggestions and new ideas for blog posts to put up lately so it's been difficult to decide what to post, however I thought this would be a great topic since for those of you who live in my area, follow me on instagram, facebook, or twitter, you know that I recently teamed up with an esteemed colleague and the owner of Ultimate Potentials (www.ultimatepotentials.com) to offer a variety of exciting upcoming events. One of the things we will be working on together is offering FREE grocery store tours every month to anyone who is interested in learning more about food and nutrition in an environment that we all know and that is filled with food!
What about new items you find in your grocery store? There's always a new cracker, cereal, soup, bread, or yogurt product with a miraculous health claim hitting the shelves. How do you find the time to read about these products and determine if they are nutritious? Or maybe you want to save money while still getting all the nutrients you and your family need but you don't know where to start. Or maybe there are some special ingredients you've always wanted to try, but you have no idea how to prepare them - well a grocery store tour may be just the answer you're looking for! There are many hidden nutrition gems even in the most well known grocery stores that are just waiting to be uncovered!
Grocery store tours, especially those led by registered dietitians, can be an excellent way to get your nutrition questions answered, learn the basics of smart shopping, discover how the food industry misleads us in our everyday shopping adventures, and also allows you learn something new and useful for your everyday life! And you know what? It's a ton of fun! I have lead quite a few tours lately and they are always full of laughs, especially for those that come as couples or in groups with their friends. I can't tell you how many times I've received emails or comments from participants that couldn't believe how much they learned! These types of tours are great for people just starting to get interested in nutrition, for people recently diagnosed with a chronic disease such as celiac disease or diabetes, and even for people who already know quite a bit about nutrition. After all, nutrition information is always changing and there is always something new to learn! Even as a registered dietitian I find I learn a lot from the participants who often share their recipes, tips, and tricks with me!
Every tour is different depending on the leader, but when I conduct a tour I focus on providing nutrition information that is specific to the group I'm leading, focuses on how to make the most nutritious choices in each area of the store (ie. Bakery, Deli, Dairy Case, Danger Aisles, etc), and I always touch on how to get the best bang for your buck! Grocery store tours provide an in-depth tour of a local store and undoubtedly a ton of information. They teach the essential knowledge and skills we all need to shop with our 'nutrition lenses' on, and can have a lasting impact on your ability to eat the way you would ideally like to.
So I encourage all of my wonderful witty readers to find a tour near you - if you live in the Winnipeg, MB area here is the poster with the details on how to get signed up for the FREE tours we are offering with Ultimate Potentials.
