Have Your Yolk and Eat It To!

Happy Monday!

So it may or may not be news to some of you that the America's Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (ADGAC) recently released their 2015 recommendations. For those of you that don't know what in the world I'm talking about, the ADGAC is a group of experts that submit dietary guidelines by reviewing current scientific evidence to the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in order to promote the health and well-being of American citizens.
1 The report outlines non-binding recommendations, which basically means that the higher-up committees such as the USDA will take the information under advisement but can pick and choose how it will affect policy and what role the government might play (if any) in implementing the recommendations.1

Why do I care about this as a Canadian dietitian? Well as we all know, what happens in America often has a direct effect on what happens in Canada. As westernized countries we often takes cues from one another on how to use/implement advances in science, technology, medicine, and in this case - nutrition. Needless to say, although this report was written for America, it certainly applies to the Canadian population as well. The report is written for use by nutrition and health professionals (enter the RDs) and is a great summary of the most recent science-based nutrition literature. I'd be lying if I said I read the whole report (it's 571 pages) but you can take a look at the executive summary here, and I have linked several articles that discuss the report below. If you are interested in reading the full report (and good on ya!) click here for the pdf.

Louis Riel Day, The Roarin' 20's, and a Razzle Dazzle Raspberry Salad

Hey friends!

I hope everyone is keeping warm! It's been pretty cold here in Manitoba the last week or so, but it hasn't slowed us down one bit. In fact this weekend was full of birthday celebrations and lucky me, my birthday fell on a holiday this year! Yesterday was Louis Riel day in MB - for those of you not up to snuff with your Canadian history, Louis Riel was the guy who helped Manitoba become Canada's 5th province way back when.

My sister-in-law and I share a birthday (crazy coincidence) and my father-in-law is born the day after. Friday night consisted of a sleigh ride in our nearby national park and a big fancy dinner with my in-laws. Saturday consisted of party planning for a big birthday bash (which even included a special baking delivery from my mom and granny). Sunday I hosted a Roarin' 20s themed birthday party, and yesterday was mainly clean-up, movie watching, and resting. All-in-all it was a fantastic weekend, but one thing that definitely got put on the back-burner was well rounded nutritious meals! A few extra glasses of wine and lots of treats was great for celebrating my birthday but I know that I need to eat a few extra veggies this week! Often when we think of eating veggies, we think of salads, which can quite frankly be very boring. I'm always looking for new salad recipes - ones that are 'razzle dazzle delicious' and pretty enough to serve to company. Well this Razzle Dazzle Raspberry Salad is definitely a new favorite and was inspired by my mother-in-law who introduced me to this salad's secret ingredient .... cranberry cinnamon goat cheese. I'll say that again - CRANBERRY. CINNAMON. GOAT CHEESE. Could anything be more amazing? Even if your not a fan of traditional goat cheese, this one is definitely a tasty treat!  I found it at my local Sobey's but you may find similar variations at other locations as well. The unique homemade salad dressing is a nice touch as well!

Plus, the recipe is easy-peasy so take a look and give it a try today!

What's the deal with protein powder anyway?

Haaaaaaappy Tuesday!

So I'll get right to it this week - a Whitty Nutrition reader (and family member of mine) requested that I do a post about protein powders since she had some questions about the different types, what to look for and/or avoid when choosing a protein supplement, and if there are better alternatives. Now this is a big topic that is full of debate so I will try to simplify  it as much as possible using actual evidence that I have reviewed. After all, dietetics is an evidence-based profession, meaning that our recommendations come from using the best evidence we have available. That doesn't mean that a client preferences aren't taken into account or that clinical judgement doesn't play a role, but keep in mind that although this blog can provide information, it is not a substitute for getting individualized advice from your dietitian or other healthcare provider. Disclaimer? Check!

Now let's get started! Any of you that currently use protein powders (or any nutritional supplements for that matter) know that there is an entire industry devoted solely to the task of coming out with the newest, hottest, most effective, best tasting, flashiest packaging possible. Every company's product is "the best." If you've never tried any type of supplement you might not realize that there are entire stores both in your local mall and online dedicated to these types of products. Now don't get me wrong, some of these products may assist specific groups of people in improving their nutrition status and overall health but let's be honest, most of it is entirely made up.

But I digress. Today we aren't talking about supplements in general and whether you need them or not, but rather focusing on how to successfully wade your way through the giant sea that is protein supplements.

World's Easiest Chicken Fajitas!

Hello Readers! Happy Monday!

I have a special treat for you all this week - a new recipe I tried out yesterday that is both healthy, delicious, and best of all EASY! I don't know about all of you, but I often find cooking inspiration on pinterest. "Pinspiration" if you will. I love perusing the site for new recipe ideas and I often stumble across many great cooking blogs in the process. I pinned a recipe called "Easy Oven Fajitas" a while back because the picture looked so appealing. Sunday afternoon I was looking for ideas on what to make for dinner and I went through some of my old pins. I clicked on this one and it lead me to a blog called "Budget Bytes" (love the name!) written by a lovely woman named Beth, which is a website/blog with tons of great recipes that are easy on your wallet. Check out her awesome site and the original recipe by clicking here: http://www.budgetbytes.com/2013/02/oven-fajitas/

Now, I'm not very good at following recipes ... at all. In fact, I often get in the mood for a particular TYPE of food (example: tacos) and then look up various recipes to get an idea of what I can make with food I already have in the house. I never let a recipe that has ingredients I don't happen to have on hand prevent me from making it. I don't want to blow my own horn or anything, but I'm sort of the queen of substitutions. Don't have eggs? I'll find a way to use flax or chia seed and water. Recipe calls for vanilla but I'm all out? Almond extract it is! It makes for some interesting combinations at times and I'd be lying if I said everything always turned out perfectly, but cooking is supposed to be fun and if I ran to the store every time I didn't have EXACTLY what a recipe called for, I'd never used up the ingredients I already have in my house. Plus I KNOW I would spend way more money on groceries -think about that extra treat or block of cheese that you bought just 'cause it was on sale every time you run in "for just one thing."  Needless to say, I make most of my recipes up as I go.

One problem with this is that when something turns out awesome it can be a little difficult to re-create. My husband will occasionally ask for "that thing you made one time - the one with chicken" and I'll try to make it again,, only to come up with a totally different dish. At least it's never boring around here!

Anyway, take a look at the original recipe to see where my idea came from, try it out the way I've described here, or put your own spin on it based on what you have at home already! It's pretty hard to mess this one up!
