I hope everyone had a great weekend and was able to keep cool and hydrated, especially if you are also from southern Manitoba, since you were likely experiencing the same extreme heat that my friends and I experienced on our "yearly" camping trip this year. I say "yearly" since it's actually been about 3 summers since we all last went camping, but we definitely talk about doing it every year so that has to count for something!
I have an absolutely wonderful group of friends that have been a part of my life since middle school (or before!) and we are fortunate enough that even though we no longer live in the same town anymore, we keep in touch and share all of our most important life moments together ... for example, babies! My amazing friend and her husband are expecting their first little one this January and since it will only be the 2nd child to join our group, it's a very exciting time and we were all ecstatic to say the least! Unfortunately she has been sick as a dog since she found out she was pregnant and was unable to spend the 2 nights camping with us, however they did manage to make it out for a whole day on Saturday with only 1 major nausea encounter. What a champ! (See me and my beautiful friends at my wedding on the Whitty Nutrition Welcome Post HERE!)
When I say my friends and I went camping, I really mean camping. Tenting it, cooking over a fire, and walking through the woods to use the bathroom. Now since my husband and I aren't regular campers we aren't as well equipped as some of the others in the group so we were really roughing it. We slept on yoga mats for the first night and even though my friend dug up an extra air mattress for the second night, it quickly deflated on us and left us sleeping back on the hard ground. We really didn't mind though, because overall it was an extremely relaxing and fun adventure. There is something very rejuvenating about having no cell phone service for 3 days and just spending time outdoors with your favorite people.
The other best thing about camping? The food of course! There is something extra tasty about roasted hot dogs, campfire s'mores, and a refreshing late night beer with friends. We of course had all of these staples packed for our trip but being a dietitian I can't help but have nutrition in mind wherever we go. Most of us packed our own main courses and then brought snacks and sides to share so there was definitely an abundance of food. In honor of all the camping trips you might be taking this summer I thought this would be a great time to share some of the food you can pack while 'roughing it' that is both nutritious and delicious!
So there you have it. It's not an extensive list but with a little imagination you really wouldn't need to pack a whole lot else while camping. If you're like me and want meals and snacks that are no-fuss and can suit everyone's preferences use your imagination and pack pre-cut fruits, veggies, and snacks that go well together and can be combined in an endless number of ways to keep you well fed for however many days you might feel like sleeping on the ground!
I hope everyone has a happy, healthy week and a safe and satisfying summer!
