I came across these little do-dad's on my latest trip to the grocery store and I was intrigued, so I picked some up and thought I would do a review on them for you this week!
The basic concept behind the 'Zip 'n Steam' bags is that by using their special venting technology, you can easily and conveniently steam a variety of foods using your microwave. Now, in case you didn't know steaming foods (especially vegetables) is both tasty, nutritious, and often superior to other ways of cooking such as boiling. Not only can boiling vegetables make them soggy and tasteless but that green water you poured down sink after boiling your broccoli? Say "buh-bye nutrients!" Nutrients from many vegetables can leach into cooking water which means foods like broccoli and cauliflower lose some of their antioxidant capacity, along with important vitamins and minerals.
Many of us don't like eating vegetables in the first place so when you are forcing yourself to get them down, you want them to taste good and also provide maximum nutrition! Now, I realize that these bags are not NECESSARY for steaming vegetables in the microwave (a bowl covered with a plate will also do the trick), however I have found that I don't always achieve the tender-crisp perfection that I desire. Also, the fact that these bags claim to perfectly steam vegetables, potatoes, and a variety of meat, poultry and seafood was enough for me to dish out the approximate $2.50 price tag to give it a try.
